Help please. My laptop wont boot up. After the windows flag page has displayed I get a blue screen showing with the following text:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\Systemroot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

I tried booting in Safe Mode, to no avail. I get the same message as above when I try.

It's this one which I think applies, but when I look at what to do it says not to use this rememdy with an OEM installed version of Windows, and it was in fact OEM installed on my Dell Inspiron 1300.

Ok thanks for the info. I'm happy to restore it. I have added extra RAM since I bought it. Will it make a difference if I restore it?

Also can you explain a bit more about how to get the files off it using Ubuntu and how to make the CD? I have an Acer Aspire One netbook running Linux Lite but it doesn't have a CD drive. My mate has a laptop which I can access and he's running Vista. Also I'm wondering how I can get the files of the Dell if I can't get it to come on?

I just thought, wont I have to change the boot sequence on the Dell to get it to look at the CD drive so it can boot from the Ubuntu cd? I guess I press f12 during the boot sequence to change the boot from the HDD to the CD/dvd drive?

My mate is in the process of downloading the Unbuntu Desktop edition and it asked him whether he wanted 32 or 64 bits option, he selected 32 bit, is that ok?

use the Ubuntu Cd to boot the Dell, then burn the Files off using the built in CD/DVD drive or a USB drive. You could move the files over the network to the Acer if it has the space (might need to use the Lan connection if wireless does not work)

the new ram will just get detected

just hit F12 to change the boot sequence as you say, 32 bit is correct

    Excellent, thanks for that.

Yes we have a network on a Netgear router. Maybe it's easier to get the files onto the Acer netbook over that. The Acer has 120gb of hard drive, so no problem there. How would I get the files from Dell to Acer using the network?

Did you shut it down properly, if not, running chkdsk from recovery console might help.
