Books for children

Hi,

Just thought I'd have a moan about Books for Children.

I responded to one of there leaflets offering a lovely Peter Rabbit book collection for £9.99; at that price if you joined the books club. I did so and got them with another set of books that I didn't order or know that they would be enclosed with my order. Ok, I thought they were a nice set of books nicely packaged and were only £4.99. So I bought them and thought nothing of it.
I did continue to get statements and had the option of the editors choice I NEVER chose to order it or tick any boxes for anything and simply left it blank everytime. However, they decided that I wanted the editors choice a set of books for an eight year old that I'm sure my six month old would have loved reading

I got there courier to pick them up as I didn't order them. They then decided they would charge me £3 for the privelage of the couriers services to pick up books that I didn't order! I argued them down to giving me a refund eventually, after a million letters to them because they conveniently had no record of the return and they thought they would make a nice bit of money on late payment charges.

NOW! they are telling me that I have fourteen days to buy six books at £5.99 each plus £1.99 postage and packaging; it's free if your order is over £25.00 but, as I only get £41.00 a week I won't be doing that!
If I don't order the books I have to pay £115.00 for the origional price of my first order of the Peter Rabbit books. I emailed them telling them there is no way on Earth that they will be getting an order from me of six lots of 5.99 in the next 14 days. They could either give me longer or not get paid a penny. They now say I have 28 days to pay or I have to pay 115.00. So I rallied round to try to get family to buy some books instead, they bought three and I am sending the cheques for those this week. I have orderded six books now and I understood that I have until the 10th of April to pay for all six.

However when I looked at my account on the website they are charging me £115.00 anyway! I questioned them in an email as to why this was and I recieved an email that looked as though it had been written by a five year old saying I haven't fulfilled my commitment!!!!

I've just got the feeling that after I have paid for the books I have ordered they will charge me £115.00 anyway!!

It works the same as the britannia dvd club, if you dont buy something you have to buy the editors choice. they are all a con but they do say this in the t&c's.

I've just cancelled my membership with Books for Children, I've been with them for about 8 years and in the early days they were really good. But there has been a few occasions now where I've received the Editors Choice even though I've posted the 'no thanks' slip back to them within good time. I got their editors choice sent to me 3 weeks ago (although I didn't order it!) and was appalled at the prospect of having to call up to arrange courier pickup - I work full-time so this would prove difficult for someone being in when the courier came. So I came to a decision to cancel and am just awaiting their acknowledgement. They have lost my custom!
  • I used world books before and they were the same, I got the ditors choice, called them and complained and cancelled. They said keep the editors choice as it's cheaper than them coming to collect it, I was telling them the books would be left outside in the cardboard box they came in as they were nothing to do with me which might of helped.

Look at the contract you signed, they may have included this clause that you have to buy more, I can't remember if world books did, but I point blank refused. Did you see that watchdog episode on book clubs, most are owned by the same company and get loads of complaints.
