Advice on what happens to Credit Cards when the named dies.

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on behalf of my mother.
My Father has recently passed away and she is unsure what happens to his credit cards that he had in his sole name? As far as she knows he had 3 and all have outstanding balances on them?
Thanks

I would call the credit card company and tell them of your fathers death which will stop any further charges being applied.
You may find they will try and make you pay the o/s debt, I think as it was in his sole name neither you or your mother are liable for the debts, but I am sure they will try and get payment from you.
Hopefully someone else will come along and answer correctly, I guess it also depends on how much money was left in his estate?0 -
I am so sorry for your loss
The first thing to do is to call the credit card companies and let them know that your father has passed away. This will mean they stop all charges (and I think interest?) and can freeze the account for you. The balances will need to be paid from his estate when it is settled but there is no need for your mother to pay them until this is sorted.
I presume there is a solicitor dealing with his affairs? If so then he can give you proper advice.
I am no expert in this but I did deal with some of these kind of issues when my grandfather died a few months ago. If there is anything I can do, or you need a hug, then please PM me.

If any outstanding nonies due cannot be paid from estate ie if not enough money then your mum is not liable as accounts were not in joint names.
hope this helps, sorry for your loss

Sorry to hear this lou.
If any of the cards are issued by high street banks, you should be able to take a death certificate in to a branch for them to see - saves having to post and await return of same.
They should freeze the accounts (susggest you check that the interestwill not accumulate further) and any balances should be cleared by the executor from the estate if funds are available, but I agree they may chase your Mum.
We're going thru this at the moment as my FIL died recently leaving a rather complicated situation - so you have my sympathy.
All the best,
