Internet settings on 3com wireless modem/router

Bit of a technical one this, but I hope someone out there can help.

I recently decided to relocate my 3com wireless modem router (3CRWDR100A-72 running on XP) from a downstairs phone point to the extension upstairs. I’d previously been connecting to the PC wirelessly without a hitch. I’ve now moved the router to the same room as the PC.

Moved the router, and have been able to get the PC talking to the router, i.e. connected to the router’s setup screens via http://198.168.1.1 without a hitch, both wired and wirelessly, but I cannot get a connection to the outside world.

I know the telephone connection is sound, as I used the extension point upstairs to configure the modem originally. I’ve tried a reset, a factory reset and a hard reset of the modem. I’ve tried to allocate DNS address manually using my (Wanadoo) ISP’s settings, but still nothing

On the “Status” screen under “Internet settings” it says “Disconnected” and in the past there have been two buttons to the right of the panel saying “Connect” and “Disconnect”, but these buttons are missing and all other fields, e.g. WAN Connection type, Internet IP address etc read “N/A”

I’m not a total technical muppet, but I’ve spent hours trying to fix this to no avail. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing your using ADSL, if so does the LED for the ADSL status go solid green or does it flash? If its flashing your not getting sync with the ADSL signal hence why you cannot get connected.

If this is the case that you are no longer getting sync on the extension upstairs (you said you initially connected it here to configure it) double check you have your micro filters in all the relevant sockets and connected in the right place.

Also if you have done a reset double check your settings again make sure your VCI/VPI are configured for the UK settings and not the US settings as generally they change back to the US settings after a factory reset
  • Thanks Hendersonb. Not at the PC right now but from memory, I think the ADSL light (which is called SYNC on the unit I believe) was not on at all. Thinking this through, that indicates that the DSL connection was not present, which could explain why no connection was present in the Status screen, which could be a problem at ISP's end?

I checked the micro filters and the connections and it all seemed fine. I did try the router downstairs yesterday and got the same problem, but armed with what you've suggested, I think I'll take it downstairs again, try it in the connection that I know definitely works and see if I get a SYNC light. I have been careful to check VCI/VPI settings each time I have reset the device so I know that is all fine.

Thanks again. If it works, I owe you a
