New car - Tax disc with strange date question
Hi don't want to give too much info as I haven't questioned the dealer yet just wanted to ask you good folk in the motoring forum because from reading post threads/posts I know there's a wealth of knowledge on here.
Bought a new car last month. Salesman said he needed insurance to tax the vehicle. Yes OK that's pretty standard. Sorted that out on the 15th May so he could tax it on the 16th May
Anyway - very happy with the car - didn't look closely at the tax disc until last week and was surprised to notice that it had an April renewal date. The stamp on it says the 15th APRIL!!! But it wasn't supposed to be taxed until the morning of the 16th MAY which is when I picked the vehicle up.
Now I've mulled it over for a week and sometimes I think it doesn't matter and other times I'm annoyed that I've lost a month's tax.
But the other thing is that the vehicle was taxed approximately 2 weeks before I even walked into the showroom to get a closer look at the car after researching the one I wanted on the 'net.
So guys what do you think happened - did they use an old tax disc that they had lying around? It looks like they wrote the prefix in first and then added the last 3 reg numbers afterwards - just slightly different handwriting.
It has made me think about it because they've sent me a customer satisfaction survey and I'm wondering whether to mention it.
Vehicle wasn't pre-reg or anything - I am the first owner on the V5 or whatever they call it now!
Thoughts guys - I know you'll have the answer - thanks in advance.

Could just be a mistake? Maybe someone picked up the wrong disc when they wrote your reg on? Anyway for whatever reason it happened, I'd be back telling them I wasn't happy and getting the right tax disc sorted out. I wouldn't be doing it through a customer survey either, I'd go back in and speak to salesman face to face.Herman - MP for all!0

as said before maybe its just an error but even if your disc had been purchased on May 26th it would have been back dated to May 1st.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Thanks Aliassojo and Bowdy.
ChrissyG - yes but surely then the renewal date would've still been May and not April? Don't know that's why I'm asking on here.0 -
I'm not sure from reading the OP but is the expiry date on the disc 31/04/10? If it is then you haven't lost out as all cars taxed in May will have that date on them. You get 12 months and the first one would have been May and the twelfth will be April.0

The expiry date should tell you when it was issued ie if you got 12 months tax on a car purchased in may 2009 the expiry date should be end of April 2010 or if it was 6 months then the expiry date should be end of October 2009.
Tax is only available with dates for the month end so as long as you got 6or12 months the issue date is not an issue.0 -
Thanks Aliassojo and Bowdy.

If the tax was bought in anytime in April, it would run from the 1st of April 2009 until March 31st 2010, so the renewal would be 1st April 2010.
If the tax was bought any time in May, it would run from the 1st of May 2009 until the 30st April 2010, so renewal would be 1st May.
What expiry date do you have?Herman - MP for all!0 -
It has an end of April tax renewal date so the date the tax was actually purchased doesn't make any difference here.
You've all been really helpful guys thanks.0 -

Maybe the issuing office hadn't changed the month on the date stamp, only the day. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
