Hi
Hope you can help, I remember my Gran had a machine for scraping new potatoes - maybe 35 years ago mind you.
It was like a salad spinner, we kids used to take turns spinning the handle on top, the inside was like sandpaper and I think you connected it to the cold tap.
I'm really fed up scraping new pototoes now and would love to buy one of these

Probably can't help, but one generation later... my mum had the equivalent attachment for her kenwood chef - incredibly noisy though. She used it when we were feeding the extended family tribe, which was fairly often.
I've never seen a hand-cranked one, but if you had a chef you could probably still get the attachment - ebay?0 -
Not very cheap at £36 but I think it is what you are looking for. I remember these as a kid, my mom had a red one (not this make)

Many thanks for that link, Amanda :T - it's a very useful website.
I've just found some shoes and slippers that are exactly what're needed by one of my elderly tenants. She is going to be so pleased that she can now have something that 'fits' properly.

I recall getting a real ticking off for leaving the spuds in for far too long and the potatoes being ground away to marble size.0

Ah, this made me laugh. I used to work in a chippy many moons ago and Italo (the boss) had a great machine in the back for peeling. He had to do the de-eye-ing by hand in freezing water though:eek:.
Anyway, my mum used to use a plastic scourer thing to scrape hers by hand. The scourer was like a wire one only made out of plastic (not the ones attached to the sponge). She held it in one hand and rubbed the tattie with it. Only took minutes.Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -
Just a thought but we don't even scrape ours, we just give them a quick wash in a bowl of water and cook them, skins an' all. The skins are full of goodness.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I use a pair of "exfoliating" mittens from the pound shop.
Just put the new potatoes in a bowl of water, pop the mittens on and rub them between your hands. Takes minutes - job's a good 'un.

I'm with Barneysmom, I really can't see the point of peeling or scraping new potatoes. I also think they have more flavour with the skins on and I don't want to lose the goodness.
ETA: Boiled new pots in their skins are a cinch to peel once they're cooked if you're serving them cold, they practically peel themselves0
