  • HI,
in my wisdom, I offered to cook some dinner for 20 rugby players.
can anyone help me with a cost effective recipe for stovies for that number of guys.
Probably going to start making it on Wednesday night
    Thanks in advance

  • Big mama bag of potatatoes :) for starters, big bag of onions.

depends on if your planning on making stoves with cornbeef, sausages or a joint of roast beef (posh stoves).

Which one are you planning on making ?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

  • still awaiting to find out which one.
going to get the potatoes and onions and wait for the decision from the boys

    cheers

stovies is a sort of stew with potatoes, onions and the meat can be a regional thing, or a whatever you have thing. To me, it is made with sliced sausage, but have seen it with mince, corned beef or leftover roast. Not my favourite, but my daughter would sell us all for it made with sausage

Ask at the butchers for some beef dripping and gravy, saut! 8 -10 onions in the dripping and gravy, average 4-5 potatoes per person -you have a lot of peeling to do!!!!!-put in the pan with the onions and dripping, stir well then put boiling water in until you can just see it coming up through the tatties, good shake of salt stir again and then put tight fitting lid on and simmer away for 20 mins, check every five mins, don't stir unless you have to, once ready give a good stir and add whatever you fancy, I always add couple handfuls of frozen peas and corned beef, about three tins would do this amount.

If you want to be really quick in making them, buy tesco cheap oven chips, do onions as above, add three bags of the chips, water and salt and cook same way, not so chunky stories but not too bad! We done them like this for our relay for life and they went down really well!

  • 2 tbs dripping, 1.5lbs tatties (sliced), 1 onion (chopped), 2 carrots (sliced), half a sma neep (small turnip), 2 tbs stock or meat jelly, 4 oz lamb (cooked and chopped), salt and pepper, lamb stock

Melt the dripping in a lge pan and cook the chopped onion until soft and almost brown. Add the tatties and mix with the onions and the dripping. Add the neep (chopped) and carrots and mix through. Heat the stock/meat jelly and the lamb stock then pour over the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper, cover the pot and cook over a low heat for around 30 minutes or until the tatties are soft and floury.
    Mmmmmmmmm
  • Don't know if it's mentioned already but stovies are always better the day after they are cooked.
