  • OMG you havent lived!!! stovies is different depending on where about you grow up - to me stovies is corned beef, fried onions, tatties (old fashioned way is cooked in beef dripping but you dont need to) served with beetroot and oatcakes but my inlaws who are from Fife stovies to them is tatties, various left over veg and cut up sausages.

  • My recipe:

    Potatoes,
    Carrots,
    Turnip/Swede.
    Onion
    Square Sausage
    Oxo Cube

Chop everything up, place in pot with water and chuck in the oxo cute for extra flavour. Simmer until thick. Add salt/pepper to taste.

    Delish!! Especially with crusty bread.

I've had stovies made from square sausage, link sausage, corned beef and stewing beef. It doesn't matter to me what it's made with however, I love it. In actual fact it's very close to Irish stew and I love that too. nom nom nom.

  • I make mine in a big pot, layer sliced potatoes, turnip, carrots, onions then slice on top. Add a small amount of water (normally enough to cover the potato layer), and let it steam cook rather than stew. Only open a couple of times during cooking. When its ready, mash it all together. You've put me in the mood now, its proper cold weather food! Make sure its good, herby butcher's slice, don't go for anything plain from the supermarket. Its still really good value for money if you spend a little extra on the slice.

Although I'm veggie, I did used to eat this when I was younger, my granny made it with mince, sliced onion and potato chunks. All boiled together with some oxo's and seasoning, lovely!

Although I was at a friends wedding in Perth a few years ago, their version was mince cooked and mashed potatoes cooked, then basically stirred together?!?! Never seen anything like it!
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

My version is made in the slow cooker: layers of sliced tattie and onion with small diced pieces meat on the top (usually corned beef or leftovers stripped from the roast DON'T trim fat off the leftover beef it needs some fat, then topped with leftover gravy with a little extra water  or h/m beef stock, loads of pepper and a wee shake of salt.

Anyone ever done a non-meat stovie?

    Any suggestions?
  • You could just use veggie sausage and make it the same way as I do. We had stovies instead if a buffet at our wedding and had a veggie option which consisted if this. There were no meat ones left by the time we got there so we had the veggie ones, and they were amazing! Just the thing to soak up the booze :)
