Don't want to put kids in 3rd row of 7 Seater, so what about the Multimac?

    Cars are not made form being hit from behind its all about frontal impacts, and as cars get stronger it can get harder to get you out - more boron steel means even the latest cutting equipment struggles to cope recent incident broke the jaws of the combi tool (jaws of life) on the cars standard side impact bars



    The best safety investment would be a defensive advanced driving course, its amazing how much more you see.

    Looking at my post again, perhaps I seemed a bit of an idiot.
    Our kids safety is paramount (we have 4) and looked at most 6/7 seaters avaliable.
    I was trying to make the point that we can take precautions, but to ensure our kids are safe 24/7 is something else.
    Our eldest 2 sit in the back seat (3 seater). Its a Grand Voyager, theres about 24 inches between that seat and the back of the car (its also got a towbar that might help slightly in a rear collision).
    The middle seats are substantial pilots seats. Approx 6 inches between the seat and the door. Our twins sit here in their car seats.

    Just to say again, I'd discount the Multimac system because if you have a 5 seater car and convert it to 6, I think your insurance could either be void (definately unless you tell them) or increased.

    Your post was helpful, really. I understand where you were coming from and I guess we can't always worry about the worst happening. I guess I worry about kids going in coaches on school trips too lol. We can always do our best to keep our kids safe but there's no guarantee nothing bad won't ever happen. I haven't looked at the insurance issue - I do vaguely remember reading that there is a way of keeping the insurance, not sure how much it would cost though. However, I'm not too keen on the multimac as my eldest would outgrow it in four years.

    If you want to be sensible - take the offer of the car and drive as carefully and be as aware as you can.

    There isn't a car on the market that can take an HGV running into the back of it and there never will be. HGVs tend to weight around 40 tonnes!

    I'm not dismissing your fears - just trying to put them into perspective. I drive a small car and I hate being on the motorway (I'd probably hate being on the motorway in a large car as well) - some driving is simply more dangerous than other driving.

    You can't protect your children from everything, unless you keep them indoors for the rest of their lives and then you are injuring them by doing so!

    Enjoy your life with your kids and let them enjoy theirs - don't get it tangled up in seatbelts and seat distances or whatever it is you are currently obsessed by.

    Thank you - as I said above, we can't always protect our kids no matter what. I guess I started panicking a bit. I grew up squashed with three other siblilngs in the back lol - my father doesn't understand this whole car seat business although I have tried explaining it to him.
  • I have a grand scenic 7 seater. When we were looking at these type of cars we found this one by far had the most boot space when the back seats are up so lots of space between the rear of the seat and the rear of the car.
    When the rear 2 are down and it is just a 5 seater, it has more space than our old estate car.

    We can fit full car seats in the rear 2 seats no problems and the seats are within the car chassis itself. The only disadvantage is the air bags do not go into the very rear of the car. (We would have had a multipla but there is no boot at all!)

    My BIL loves his CRV though and the 6 of them happily drive to France and back in it.

    Multimac thing is just moving the problem - what if someone drive in the side of you..........

    We have a sharan and had someone drive in the back when stopped at ped crossing. Only damage to the Sharan was paint damage and parking sensors (eldest was sat in the third row). Car behind was much worse off, but in reality it was a fairly slow accident and my partner got away with mild whiplash (genuine 0 not just for a claim).

    The reality is that Euro Ncap dont test for rear end so the manufacturers dont build to it - cars are built for side and head on crash. If you meet a lorry head on / rear / side your stuffed anyway in most cases

    Forgot to add that I cant see how you can legaly use the multimac as the V5 states the number of seats in your car. This is what you are insuring against so not sure if it would be classed as a modification or not plus cars airbags are designed to align with the seats - if you start adding extra seats / people you rund the risk of being injured by the airbags in an accident
