questions when selling car
hi all
My dad has asked me to sell two vehicles for him as he is no longer up to looking after them. i have had interest in one but i have been getting asked for allot of info. normal i thought ppl don't want to waste time and money seeing a vehicle they don't want but one in particular is asking for photocopies of past mot's etc. should i copy them and delete personal info or run for the hills they want the vehicles id. (it's a classic car if that makes any difference)

Not sure why they would want past copies of MOT certificates - if it has a current one, then I would've thought that that was all that mattered.
Tell them that if they want them, it will be at a cost (to them) of £10 per certificate - which is about the price of a copy!!! See if they are still interested or are time wasters!Genie

Why not ask them to pop round and have a look at the physical things? It will put both you and the potential buyer at rest and confirm their interest is 'genuine'The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

For a classic car, it's not unusual to ask to see past MOTs, as it proves the car has been maintained in a roadworthy condition, as opposed to being a rusting shell for years until being restored recently. However, it's normal practise to accept the seller's word on this until you actually come to inspect the car, when the MOT certificates can be examined."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

You could offer the vehicle V5 reference nbumber and reg number. By doing this it gives people access to the MOT histoy from the motinfo website.0

But only for the last few years.
Its standard practice0 -
Enthusiasts like a bit of a history with regards to the car (old expired road tax discs would also be of interest).
The guys probably genuinely interested and wants the info before he wastes your time and his time/money to come and view.
Ask him for a fee to get copies done, it'll be a surefire way to get rid of a potential buyer.0 -
also if mileage has been added to the older MOT certificates it can give the buyer an indication of type of use and if the current mileage is genuine or not. if its a classic car the odometer might only have 5 digits so maybe the car your selling has pretty low miles the buyer may be wondering if its been round the clock before or if this is its first time around, so he knows if its 40,000 miles or 140,000 miles.
nothing sinister im sure....work permit granted!0 -
A paper trail with a classic car can double its value. Buyers can be more interested it this than the car.0

I get customers trying this on with humdrum stuff like Vectra's and Mondeo's saying "Ooooh I have all the old tax discs y'know..." in the hope that it might be worth another £500...0
