Ok I've set up a user for each person in the family. Is it right that when someone installs a programe the shortcut should appear on the desktop of each account? i kind of hoped that when each person logs on it would only show their stuff to them iykwim.
Have I got to change a setting somewhere..if so what and where please?

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

While some programs ask if you want every user to see it, most don't.
Simple way for now, is go to the start menu and select "run", then type:
explorer C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
This folder contains shortcuts that all users will see on their desktop.
Select all the one's you don't want to see and right click and cut
Now hit the UP arrow twice, open the user name folder that wants those icons and open their desktop folder. Now right click and select paste.
You've now removed all the icons you don't want without deleting them for the user that needs them.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Ooh thanks Strider....that sounds really simple to do.Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. It is, honestly....
I could have said to use ctrl+x (cut) and ctrl+v (paste), but no I went through the menu's instead because I know the shortcut keys confuse people
It'd take seconds to do....
7 seconds actually... Just did it
Perhaps I should explain further.... The your desktop is actually a folder that remains open permanently. But it's not one folder it's actually a combination of two folders:
"all users\desktop" contains files that everyone see's, "yourname\desktop" contains files only you can see.
By removing the files from the "all users" desktop, you will no longer see them.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Sorry Strider, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic in my last reply. I did really mean thanks and that it did sound easy I was expecting some techno gobbledegook! Not simple stuff. Thanks again, and sorry if it sounded like I wasn't grateful to you.In fact it was very quick and I did it straight after I'd thanked you.Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. also note that just because it is removed from their desktop doesn't mean they can't use that program it just isn't as a shortcut for them
to stop them using it altogether install into your own profile c:/documents and settings/username I think0 -

Ahhhhhh.....
Sometimes no matter how simple you make things sound, it still gives people that "glazed" look.
No worries though, glad it worked for you!
