Depends a lot on the aspect of the house and its relation to the houses next to it and around it. It would be unusual to have a fence more than, say 4 ft. I don't know if there's any specific legislation on the height (as long as its not more than 6ft 6" (I think)) but that would look odd in most situations. If it's a relatively new build, you might have restrictions written into the conveyance.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

    As staffie1 said it depends.

If your house is on a corner then you probably will only be allowed a fence of 4ft including hedging so road users and pedestrians can see round the corner safely. Ask your council planning department in this case.

Also having a high front fence is actually dangerous.

Burglars like houses with high front fences or high hedging as they can easily go about their business without being seen.

Therefore if there are no restrictions on how high you can make your fence for safety either:
    a. get railings and ensure that you don't have any high plants growing up them so your place can be seen from the street, or b. make sure the fence is not at a higher level than your ground floor front windows as seen from the street.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

get a hedge. There's virtually no restrictions on how high they can grow. :)

your indication of height seems to be at odds with olly300 if its a corner....mind you....would you really want a 10' hedge...be a bit dark....lol

Depends how big your front garden is!

In my former house there was a restriction of 6ft but I got right to increase it after my springer spaniel managed to spring over that! Neighbour agreed as him appearing in their garden freaked them out :rotfl:

Take a trip to wealthy Sevenoaks. There are many houses hidden behind huge fences and hedges. Perhaps friends of Kenneth noye?
