Updating Drivers

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper I've been Money Tipped!
The question might sound silly but I recently checked the drivers for my Dell Inspiron 510m from the Dell site and it suggested updating some drivers; some were classified as, 'optional,' others as 'recommended' others as 'urgent'. Well I downloaded the 'recommended' and 'urgent' ones. Now I realize I don't know what to do next :o

The shortcuts are on my desktop; when I click on one it as me if I want to run the file to which I reply 'run.' It then gives me some info about it and I click continue which brings me to a window which says 'select the folder where you want to unzip the files to' and suggests C:\dell\drivers\R85950; or whatever the driver is. But when I select that folder I'm told there is no such folder and I'm asked if I want to create one - I'm not sure if I do or not? What should I do next, how and why? I had thought that this would have been an automatic process - and well not to put to fine a point on it I'm challenged when it comes to this type of stuff :D

Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • You do want to create the folder, once the folder is created it should automatically start installing the driver. I tend to give it a proper name ie C:\dell\drivers\R85950-Audio (if it is the audio driver, likewise Graphics, NIC etc)
There are many things I'd like to say to you, but I don't how...

To be honest the general rule of thumb concerning drivers is "if it aint broke dont try and fix it" - 99% of updates to drivers will not show any signifcant changes and unless you have issues with the operation of the pc I would suggest to not bother.

You can unzip to the recommended location, it should not impact on anything siginifcant and the system should pick up the new driver anyways.

Personally if no issues with performance, I would not bother updating drivers.
