My father has been looking at buying an MX5. He's got a boring car (Focus) and an interesting motor bike (BMW something or other), plus now he's bought a minibus for group use. So he's got too many vehicles and it's not cost effective. Anyway, he's keen on replacing the bike and car with a sort of compromise fun car, like an MX-5. A good idea I reckon.

We went to look at an MX-5 for a laugh tonight. The guy wanted £4K for it. Too much I thought. But then we looked at it. Garaged since new, over serviced, not a blemish, 35K miles, UK spec, hard top included etc.

Then again, 1.6 rather than 1.8 and still a bit expensive.

I've looked on Autotrader and you can buy 1992 1.6s for £2K nowadays, maybe with more miles.

I've told him to go and look at more to get a better feel for what you get for the money.

Then again, he'll get £8K for the bike and Focus so can come out in profit and with a new toy.

Parkers now charge to look at their price guide, so apart from nipping into a newsagents to take alook, are there any other online price guides?

A guy at work has a 1991 H plate Mx5 for sale with 57k on the clock and he wants £3250. You can use that as a comparison.

    OK, thanks for the info.

I've told him to sell the bike privately. Is there an Autotrader equivalent for bikes?

Yep, it's called Biketrader and you can get to it from their website.

Sounds like a lot for a 14-year old car, I never knew that MX5s were so expensive!

I sourced an H reg Mx5 for a customer/friend for £4000, the summer before last.

It was like new 28000 miles & no probs it being 1.6.

considering the rubbish I'd looked at before finding this one, you're lucky to have found yours so easily!!

    BUY IT!!

& to get an idea of the bikes worth, chat to Nick at http://www.forcemotorcycles.com he knows his stuff & MIGHT offer to sell it for you, to save some advert costs!!
