This is what I came in my order last week. The majority of food is to last the month, this is just for me and my partner. We mainly plan big meals for weekends, as I eat at work during the week.

Friday-Chicken stir fry (chicken legs, half beansprouts, half sugar snap peas, sweetcorn and noodles).
Saturday-Fried pork steak, jacket potatoes, sugar snaps, sweetcorn
    Sunday-Pasta, pesto and cheese
BF will have pasta/noodles during the week or sometimes we will have fish if I've only had a light meal at work.
We will also make meatballs (pork mince), cottage pie (beef mince), pasties using mince and frozen veggies, Bolognese, roast chicken, chicken and chips, chicken stir fry, and sticky pork (streaky rashers, pineapple, brown sauce).

We do also have a good store of food and find this really helps. Many of the items on the list (sweetcorn tins, tuna, tomatoes, orange squash) are for the store cupboard and will keep us going for longer if we have problems with money or getting to shops-both BF and I have back problems.

We also don't eat much bread, so what we buy are part baked rolls for when we do fancy some and they can be frozen. As for vegetables and fruit, we buy these week to week as we've found the quality of those delivered is not very good.

Gosh, don't know if we've fallen out or not... Just thought it'd be easier to spin it into an exciting thing rather than leading with disappointment

    No offence meant, honest!

Got to say there are some good ideas on here.
More and more I realise that shopping south (by this I mean on the UK mainland, not 'down south' lol) is much easier and cheaper.
So many of you mention Home Bargains, Aldi, Asda, Sainsbugs etc and I miss having all those to chose from. Here we have Tesco, Lidl, Coop (all smallish compared to mainland stores!) and local shops- anything else we have to go off the island for (and that costs!). I try to stock up when at mums but its a faff bringing too much back. I think I will try to set aside some of my Household budget for next trip away so that I can stock up in all these cheaper shops, and set aside some car boot space too!!!

OrkneyStar, I think you should borrow a van! Do people who are traveling to the mainland collect shopping lists for their neighbours so pool resources? There might be an opportunity there, I think

Another point for OP is that if there is a 99p store around, again they are doing Amoy Jar sauces for 2 for a 99p. They feed a family of four easily - last night we had the yellow bean and cashew one, chicken, babycorn, onions, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and there was 3 large portions there, and we only used half the jar.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

There is only 3 of us in the car (and one is a toddler) and so it is fine for us just to fill the boot and other spaces - always careful not to block the back window though ;). Any van which would safely seat three would cost even more than a car does!
As for pooling well that is an ok idea but tbh I don't want to spend my time doing other peoples shopping!

I have no idea why I imagined you might be going to the mainland on your own. The getting shopping for other people was more about them getting for you, rather than you cramming a car full of shopping with three passengers in it. It just surprises me that folk wouldn't club together but I expect I have an idealised impression of what living on the island is like.

Oh I am sure some people do club together, especially those living on the smaller islands who have to get a ferry to the Orkney mainland and then another one to the real mainland!
I did used to go on my own when I was working (but then of course less shopping time), and I was away with just me and DS too recently (but with my sore back I had to not overdo it!).
I just prefer to get my own stuff (even if someone offered- in fact someone did offer to get me Stardrops!) and also would not want to be getting other folks stuff as its too much to organise.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts :).

I did notice Tesco had a big sign saying the prices in Aldi - actually on some things they are cheaper (than Aldi). Knew it wouldn't be too long before they started matching prices - no one is allowed to compete with mighty Tesco. (Yeah I do shop there and save the points - for wine, I am so easily bought)...
  • is there a reason why you do your shopping online? if you go at different times of day you can find out when your local asda puts out their reduced items which can be frozen for when you need them.

also have you tried those powdered shake on sachets? you can get wedges flavours and chinese etc?

    good luck! :D
