How long should it take to download 170mb zipped file over a 10mb broadband link running at full capacity?. Could it be slow due to problems at the site where downloaded software is stored, if the broadband checks out as fully operational?

3 mins at max speed, however very few webservers will support a 10mbit upload to a single user.0

10mpbs connection translates to download speeds of 1.25MB/sec, but you'll probably see about 1.15MB/sec from decent servers.
So 170MB downloaded at 1.15MB/sec will take about 2 minutes 30 seconds.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
It's taking a lot longer than that. I have run a check on the speed of the Virgin line and it looks to be operating correctly. Could the delay be at the other end? (I am downloading MP3s).0

What site are you using to download from ? And what transfer rate are you getting ?
10Mb is an awful lot of bandwidth to offer to one person to download - or at least it is when you consider there maybe 100's/1000's of people trying to download at one time.
Chances are the site is limiting you to alot less than 10Mb despite you being able to download at this rate.Laptop: Asus X58L; 2Ghz Celeron M575; 1Gb RAM; Intel X3100 Graphic chip set; 120Gb Hitatchi HTS542512K; 15.4" Widescreen. Vista Home Basic

Well I have run two online tests on connection (Virgin Broadband) and both report download speeds of around 9mb being available at present. I am downloading MP3s from a music magazine site in the USA to which I have a VIP digital subscription - this allows me to download their monthly music samplers.0

Well from that then you should be able to determine that its definitely not your end.
A couple of things that I picked out in your post are;
1: Your downloading them from the states - The theory is the further away you are to the source (in this case the USA) the slower the transfer rate, so for the USA that will make a difference though you still get the track within no more than 5-6 minutes.
2. You say they are sample tracks - I can't see the company opening up full connection on a sample track.
My guess is they are actually uploading at something nearer 1Mb/2Mb and so you will get a transfer rate around 10-30Kbps and will take around 7-10 minutes.
As I say though this is only a guestimate.
Can you tell us how long it estimating remaining time to download ? With that we can work out roughly what sort of transfer rate you are getting.Laptop: Asus X58L; 2Ghz Celeron M575; 1Gb RAM; Intel X3100 Graphic chip set; 120Gb Hitatchi HTS542512K; 15.4" Widescreen. Vista Home Basic
