I've just blown £350. Can you help?

Hi;

Newbie here - feeling rather foolish.

Story is. Last night came home to no electricity.

Called supply board - who came around & confirmed that it wasn't supply issue -but fuse box had burnt out.

So arranged for a electrician to come around, this morning.

He replaced fuse box - checked all circuits in house. Nice bloke. Professional. £350.

At the time it hadn't crossed my mind that this might be covered on the insurance.
But I found that I had emergency cover - which included cover when no electricity. Bingo! I thought.

But then I found that I should have phoned the insurance line - and they would have arranged an engineer etc.

So it seems that I have wasted £350 - as they will not pay this.
And I could have had the work done on insurance.

I know that I didn't follow the procedures... but £350! Ouch!

Does anyone know whether it is worthwhile trying to pursue this at all?
Any chance of a good will gesture?

Or should I write it off as an expensive lesson learned.

Agree. I suspect that if they pay out they'll pay out the discounted rate that their tradesman would have charged them - a couple of hundred quid being better than nowt.

I'll probably give it a go.

    But under what grounds?

Does anyone know of any precedent of Insrance companies, being sympathetic, when I haven't follwed procedure?

I would just call them and play it dumb. Say you had to get the work done and would like to make a claim.

Back in January, my ex had a burst pipe in the loft when he was away (ouch) and when he came back he called the emergency line. His neighbour is a builder and relative is a plumber and he arranged for him to do the emergency work (he had no power/water/gas on his return) The emergency people literally said to get someone himself as it was a Sunday and nothing could be done - he said - I someone arranged already - they were just 'yeah, fine'. He then just sent the receipt and the damage report (you'll need to get one) and they just paid the bill.

Remember there will be excess to pay.

Just be honest and see what they say. Panic, not thinking straight, etc.
