Alternative to handbreak?

I have A LOT of TV box sets to rip to avi. So I googled to find the best way to do this, handbreak seemed to pop up a lot, so I gave it a try. It does exactly what I need, but it takes over an hour and a half to convert a 25 minute episode. Obviously that time will increase with eposide size, and at this rate it'll take months.
Obviously if it's the best tool for the job I'll just persevere, but since I'm the impatient type I was wondering if there's a quicker alternative. I tried makemkv, which was great, nice and quick, but it converted the VOB to an MKV of the same size, meaning a 25 minute episode was a gig in size. Handbreak compresses them down to around 300meg, with no loss of quality I can see. So I'm looking for something quicker than handbreak, but not as basic as makemkv.
Any suggestions?

Media encoding basically hits the CPU as hard as it will allow, and it does take time....Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks.
Yeah, I figured I'd just have to deal with it taking huge amounts of time, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask if there was a quicker alternative around.Sigless0 -
Can I ask why you want to change VOB to AVI. All these re-encoder take a massive amount of time and CPU but I personally use FairUse Wizard to convert to Xvid and Handbrake when converting to MP4. I haven't tried the speed of DVDFab but it something else that you could also try.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0
