I dont know if it is me being thick, but i have had a 28inch widescreen tv for a while now and when i bought it i always assumed that when you watched a film that was made in widescreen you wouldnt have the black lines at the top or bottom.

Have i just got it set up incorrectly or is this the way it should be? If it is the way they should be whats the point in having a widescreen tv ??? :-/

Widescreen comes in 2 main formats 1.85:1 (~16:9) and 2.35:1

What you're probably viewing is a 2.35:1 ratio film which will display in letterbox format on a widescreen TV.

If the source is a DVD or Video, check the box as it usually states the format there.

And if it's a DVD, it's possible that your DVD player is set up to output the wrong format (it'll be buried in the Setup somewhere).

    Likewise for Sky.

If they're cinemascope that should be 2.35:1 - so black lines on widescreen. Otherwise, they'ld be 1.85:1 so should fill the widescreen.

Whats the make and model of the TV?

Hmm ... couldn't find it and the closest I got was AV-28R4S.

Without knowing what you've got connected, I'd start from scratch.

1 .... disconnect everything from the TV.
2 .... connect your DVD player to the TV - via SCART?
    3 .... find a 1.85:1 or 16:9 widescreen DVD.
4 .... play it - does it fill the whole screen?
Yes - then you have no problem ;-)
No - either the DVD player isn't sending a wide-screen signal or
the TV's ignoring it. (based on the manual for the TV I found)

    Did it work?

If not - whats the DVD player?

BTW - does the TV remote have a zoom button? Try this too.
