Hi-

Our 1998 1.4 corsa breeze just failed MOT this morning on -

1) front track rod
2) rear wheel bearing
3) side light

guy has come back and said roughly £100 for repairs. Car is going out to pasture soon under scrappage (he doesn't know this) so trying to keep costs down to minimum. Does this sound reasonable??

Cheers
John

Cheers for that-last years MOT mentioned play on both o/s and n/s rear bearings so fair enough. The side light has being temperamental for a while now(couple of years). I could obviously change the bulb myself but think i will leave it to the. My reasoning for this is that when it doesn't go on sometimes a rap to the bonnet sorts it so it's not the bulb but wiring/electrical? so all in all looks like £65 for the labour. Could have been worse as i thought my gasket was going to be a problem(signs are there but i'm told could also be just condensation).

    thanks again

Someone else being duped to buy a new car because of the "fantastic" deal being offered in collaberation between Dealers and the Government....and some people say gimmicks don't work.

Get car MOT'd and keep driving, or if you're desperate for a "new" car sell it privately and go into the dealers with "cash on the hip". ;)

Sigh! I wondered if this would happen. Listen everybody STOP what you're doing right now and don't scrap your old car that is starting to cost more and more and keep throwing money at it. Also none of you out there obviously have a clue what you're doing and have done any research at all. There is no chance that this may actually be a reasonably good deal for some people depending on their circumstances! Sidmon thanks very much for your comments and the answer to my question is??:rotfl:

Depends on the garage, but it's a fair price. If he knows it's being scrapped, how is he on repacking the bearing with grease? May work.
Scrappage deal is great, new car for under £5000, then low tax, no MOT, warranty, can't go wrong really.

Thanks-i think the garage is ok. I haven't mentioned to the guy that the car is getting scrapped but i will do and see if he can do anything. I wanted him to commit to price for repairs before i mention scrapping to him as you're argurably needing an MOT just as much but i see what mean. Will only be on the road another couple of months blah, blah

Well it looks like your options are paying up, or having the car repaired somewhere else but having to pay the MOT cost again.....bit a no brainer really....just pay the hundred quid.

P.S. Obviously you're not counting depreciation on a new car as "costs", give me a few repair bills anytime compared to that!

Think Sidmon has a point for that sort of money probably best just getting him to do it assuming he MOT'd the car but certainly ask if there is any way of getting price down as low as possible.

Does he know you? Or might he think you are an inspector in which case he might dig his heels in. I know the MOT stations around us have been having a torrid time with over zelous inspections.

The reason i chose them and today was i was told by by locals who live near where i work to stick it in on a saturday am and if some things are touch and go he may let it go. Since posting i have spoken to a mate who is mechanically minded and he seems to think £100 was fair enough. Obviously i was committed to there as soon as i took it unless he came away with a ridiculous price.

With regards to depreciation i have taken account of it-i wouldn't think a hyundai i10 is going to fetch much in 5 years(or even 2) but i know this. Also depends on what repair bills for your old car are going to cost- i think my head gasket could be on way. Sidmon-i agree with you to the extent that this will not be good for everybody(far from it) but depending on your circs it may stack up for some.

Thanks to all above for your replies
