I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend Columbus Travel Insurance (annual policy worldwide for 2 £75)
We went to Mexico on the Sunday before the government said not to travel because of swine flu on the Tuesday back in April. By the Thursday we found out that the Mexican government were closing all public places for the next 6 days, the hotel was becoming deserted and we made the difficult decision to return home,
We were traveling independently so had no big package holiday to make the decision for us and refund our money. I claimed through our insurance and only on Monday received a letter saying that there was no provision for such a claim but that they gad forwarded it to an underwritter. At a max we should expect no more than the accomodation we hadn't used.
Today I received a cheque for just over half the cost of the whole holiday. No idea how they've worked it out and frankly I don't care, I'm hot footing it to the bank. I'd thought this might take months to sort out but it is just 2 and half weeks since I sent the claim form in.
Sorry to go on but wanted to share this good experience with everyone!!

Careful, OP: you're beginning to restore my faith in insurance companies. . .
