Closing A&L account

A few months ago I signed up for the £100 offer thinking I might use the account if it's as good as my Halifax one. After doing a bank transfer which took 3 days, which is normally instant with my other bank account and using their confusing internet banking, I think I'll close it.

I don't want to have to make a long phone call in which I'm hassled into keeping it open and having to use it, so I'm asking if anyone knows if I can close it by post or e-mail or if they have done so. All I've found on their website is an address, but I'm not sure if it's the right one. I'm guessing they'd much rather I phoned them...

Ring them. It takes 5 minutes to close and just say NO, NO, NO to anything they offer.

No! on the phone, in person in a branch or by letter.
They only make it easy to apply online, not close stuff.

I have to say I've had an A & L account for years but have only recently set up my internet account and once you get the hang of it it's really easy to use. They use the "fast payment" system too so credit card payments etc are received really quickly. I've always found them really pleasant and helpful to deal with so if you persevere you may be pleasantly surprised.

Alliance and Leicester only offer Faster Payments up to £250. Over this, it goes the old fashion way.

Hi,
I recently closed my current account with them. I just phoned and told them that I wanted to close my account, they asked why, i told them etc........ The whole thing took about 5/10 mins and they sent me a cheque and confirmed account was closed within 7 days.

I just wrote them a letter. They probably aren't answering the phones now anyway.

If you want to close your account go ahead and do it quickly. All their telephone numbers are expensive ones but try 0800 409 6700. Unfortunately I moved my account and did not close the A&L one properly but it was left dormant. They have (unlawfully) charged me a fee of £5 and put me in the red even though I do not have a credit facility and are going to charge me a further £65 for being in the red! Get rid of your A&L account asap - they just seem to be out to screw people.
