Late payment charge on my Argos card

Hi Martin and all,
I'm pleased I read the reclaim bank charges article!
I was a week late paying my Argos card bill and was charged £17.50 late payment fee - 49% of the original debt!!!
I called customer services, complained that the the charge was unfair and refused to pay it, quoting the two Acts referring to unfair charges.
The operator went on the defensive saying "if a big company like Argos was doing something unfair, we'd know about it."
I replied that I was happy to pay the original bill plus the interest charge but no more, and Argos could sue for the rest.
Lo and behold, the charge was withdrawn!
One more notch in the "corporate giant beating stick"!
Regards,
Ian

Before you get carried away in your celebration at saving yourself £17.50, you might want to take a look at what damage Argos have inflicted on your credit file.igdirect wrote:One more notch in the "corporate giant beating stick"!
I hope it doesn't affect your ability to get mainstream (cheap) credit in the future.
Can you set up a direct debit with the Argos card? It might stop the problem happening again.0
