What Notice is appropriate for good tenants???

Hi

My husband and I let our home, and moved back in with my parents for a while. We now have a baby, and another one on the way! Accordingly, we want to move back into our home. Our tenants were on a 6 month AST, which became periodic in August 2008. I know that we need to give them two months notice, but is it necessary for us to serve a Section 21 Notice? They have been good tenants and we do not wish to offend them, I was going to just send a letter explaining the situation and giving them the two months notice; however, if they become 'good tenants gone bad' and don't want to leave would our letter be sufficient to move on to the next stage of eviction?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

send a section 21. do it properly. Just add a nice covering note, & if you ok with them moving out earlier if they find somewhere sooner, & paying the remainder of the rent pro rata, let them know. Also state that they have been good tenants, & you are happy to provide them with glowing refs etc. Give a date by which you will contact them closer to the date to discuss move out procedures.
