I have the Sagem wireless router provided by sky. We tried a cheap usb adapter from Argos( Buffalo) it worked intially, but now keeps dropping the signal every few seconds. Can anyone tell me what these things are that you buy to plug into the mains sockets to set up a home wireless network? As you can see am a typical computer novice
Thanks
We have an old pc for our son who this will be for, it is windows xp my hubbie says its because the pc is old but I disagree, what do you think
replies much appreciated

You are talking about Homeplug devices. If it's dropping the wireless signal, that is not realy anything to do with the age of the PC, or running XP. Most PC's are running XP-more than Vista. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Any wireless 'g' adapter should work with your modem. I tend to go for Netgear myself but that is just a personal preference.
You haven't established that the Buffalo adapter is at fault. Does the router connect OK with other devices on your network?
The first thing I would do is to change the channel on the router, as a neighbouring network may be clashing with it.No free lunch, and no free laptop

My son has his x box360 through it and my hubbie has his laptop through it both wireless so router should be fine, I will try the netgear, many thanks0 -
Before you do that I would disable the wireless on the laptop, and install the Buffalo on that. Then try it next to the PC, then move around, try it next to the router. That should establish if it's just a weak signal or some other problem.
If the PC is down low (on or near the floor) and the adapter in the USB port at the back, then the signal can get lost, as it's blocked by surrounding objects, including the big metal box of the PC. In this instance I would put the adapter on an extender cable to raise it up higher, clip it to a bookshelf or similar. No free lunch, and no free laptop
