Charged £35 for an unpaid DD

I am writing on behalf of my partner who lives in Scotland.

This morning she got a letter to say they were going to charge her £35 as a direct debit couldn't be paid due to the account being short by a few pence.

She thought the direct debit had already been paid but the firm didn't request it until a few days after the normal request date. She has never had a charge before and is currently getting benefits as she is unable to work so this will take a large chunk of her income.

Is there a letter she could sent as she feels the charge is very unreasonable over a few pence. She doesn't want to call them by phone and would rather send them a letter.

Thanks for your help in advance.

It might be worth her asking at her local branch specifically on the basis that it was the first time she had been charged.

I would do that but she doesn't / can't leave the house. She also doesn't want to talk to them on the phone so would rather write a letter. So thats why i thought someone may have an idea of what to write.

She needs to write to them explaining the circumstances behind why she was unable to pay in funds to cover the payment, so housebound might be one and see whether as it is her first charge that they will refund it.
