attempted break in!

hi all just after a little advice, our house was empty yesterday for less than 2hrs and some one tried to break in. they must have seen us taking the dogs out to the vets. the lower lock has been damaged still locks but wiggles about. They had tried to use a rope with a hoop in it to open the top lock(we found the discarded rope).
I have reported it to the police and i am waiting on the housing office opening(half day training) to inform them. dose anyone know if i have to pay for the repairs to the door/locks or is it the housing i checked the manual we got about repairs etc but it only covers lost keys, although it says they have a duty of care to insure your security within the property. just not sure if they would fix it as it is still secure with the upper lock.don't want left with a trades man wanting to be paid and no money to give him.
Thanks

just in case anyone would like to know the outcome from today. Have had the local police round to see what had happened to the door just in case is happens to anyone else. they were surprised to see the technique used he used the term"Chinese rope trick" for the attempt on the Yale type lock (it is also used to turn keys left in locks) and explained the lower lock damage was to give the lock more play so it is easier to kick in.
As for the repair costs these are covered in this situation provided the police give you a crime reference number, if you don't get one you need to cover the cost. makes sense stops people getting new locks for nothing when they just lose keys.
I have invested in a metal post gaurd to stop the rope trick from happening again, and the joiner that was out will come back when i can buy a better mortice lock.slowly going nuts at the world:T0 -
absolutely disgusting!!, I tell you when I get my house if anybody attempts to break in then they will be suffering some damage (after they went to hit and stab me of course;))
Scum in this country have no place, except the gutter!0 -
whomever it was has obviously been watching our flat and seen us leave with our dogs as no one in their right mind would break into a flat with two Akita s running free around it. our flat has never been empty since we moved in. Now my OH is refusing to go on holidays and days out this summer in case any thing happens.
These selfish idiots just do not think of the repercussions to their actions. my son slept with us last night as he was worried that they would come back when we were in bed. i will now need to see if my sister or niece will stay in the house so we can get out in the summer if not it's the tent in the garden lolslowly going nuts at the world:T0 -
Which door was this, the back door? If so can you make your garden more secure ie anti-vandal paint, prickly bushes, trellis etcThere are many things I'd like to say to you, but I don't how...0

it's a flat one door only but we have seen the neighbors and asked them to make sure they lock the doors we have secured a guard over the post box(it's like a letter cage). not much else we can do till we have money although I'd love a new door and better locks and would reinforce the door jams if i could. money jar has been started for mortise may turn it into door reinforcement fund lolTurin_Turambar wrote: »Which door was this, the back door?
