Is there any truth in...

We (my partner, son and I) will be moving out of halls of residence, a family flat at the end of August back into a rent house. I have not paid a gas, electric or water bill in 3 years due to live there.

My partner believes that when you move into a rent property and automatically take on the new utility bills you can not change your provider for 6 months. Is this true?

If not how would I go about changing?

Sort out the new providers before even moving in as I would not have been paying the existing ones at all?

sort out the new providers a few weeks after moving in and cancel the existing ones?

Any help would be appreciated as I would like to budget this into the rental property as it may be the best house, but be with the worst utility company and I won't know if there is anything I could do about it straight away.

thanks

When you move into your new property, take meter readings and supply these to the existing supplier(s)

The supplier(s) will set up new account(s) in your name(s).

You are then free to consider switching supplier which typically takes 4-6 weeks from date of application.
