Shall I start again getting a new PC or laptop?

PC was purchased in March 2007. Last night when I switched on PC it made a funny noise and after that unable to get anything showing on my monitor. I am using my father's laptop at the moment to type this out btw.

I have switched on and off the PC several times last night and this morning and the problem hasn't gone away. Looked on various forums etc on the internet and to find out that my graphics card and possibly my motherboard has failed.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

The thing is that I was really looking forward to buying The Sims 3 today:D and got the week booked off next week:jand was so looking forward spending a few days on this:mad::mad::mad:.

Shall I start again as I already spent £75 on it as it crashed on me! I am worried that if I am going to repair it should I put the money towards a new PC or laptop rather spending more money on something which may die in a few weeks time or finding out that new games don't support my specifications.

I am not computer savvy.

To answer whether it is worth repairing is impossible without diagnosing the exact fault - Nothing you have said indicates that the problem is the graphics card or the motherboard (although it could be) - I would think the most likely problem is either a faulty power supply (very quick and easy to fix) , or a failed hard drive (a bit more involved).

What type of "funny noise" was it ? does it still make a noise when you switch it on ? , do any lights come on at all ? ....what was the problem you spent £75 on, how long ago, and was the repair done by a reliable shop ???
