best fast growing plants to act as hedge/barrier?

Someone has recommend pyracantha. Anyone got experience with this shurb/plant?

On the plus side, it has insect-pleasing white flowers, followed by bird-pleasing red, orange, or yellow berries.

On the minus side it has long thorns.

It grows quite quickly, but tends to need a little support from the wall/fence.

About 24" - from a local garden centre.

A friend has just bought a 100 plants off the web (same size) for £75, so 75p each.

Not seen Pyracantha as a proper hedge. We took one out last year - grew to roof height against the east wall of the house.
