can anyone help me find the best place to get a WIRED router for my laptop, desktop & xbox360.
i have had a thompson speedtouch510 for the last 3 years or so but today i woke to find it has stopped working!!!!!
i have a dsl modem BUT am i right thinking if i get a router without modem i can use the dsl then to the router?? if this is true does the pc have to be turned on so the 360 will work??
i think it would be best for me to have router/modem together.
thx in advance
terry

If your DSL modem happens to incorporate an RJ-45 (Ethernet) connection instead of the more usual USB, you will indeed be able to plug it into a bog-standard standalone router. Otherwise, you'll need a combined router/modem.
In either case, you can turn the PC off with impunity: the router can manage the connection by itself after initial configuration.0 -
https://www.ebuyer.com and https://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk sell them cheaply.
ebuyer also sell dirt cheap ethernet cards if you don't have oneEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I suspect your DSL modem has only a USB connection and anyway since adsl modem routers are so cheap it ain't even worth settling for less than that.
I've had this wired adsl modem router (which is also a 10/100 Mbps 4 port switch) since August 2004. I've not had a single problem with it and it's proved to be fantastic value for money. (Incidentally, it was £29.99 when I bought it)
I think you should get a wireless adsl modem router though. Having a wired network kind of defeats the logic behind using a laptop.
It should really come with built-in wireless but the Xbox 360 comes with a cable that allows you to connect the console to an ethernet port or it can be made wireless with this devicealexjohnson wrote:The XBox 360 has built-in wireless networking, doesn't it?The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0 -

i want to conect using ethenet not usb0 -
Yes it does. All routers with built in modems are online 24/7 or until you unplug the router.0

AOL will only provide technical support for equipment which has been proven to work with their services.blackpoolowl wrote:...they told me only to buy netgear or thompson because i use aol.0 -

I'm using a SafeCom SAMR 4114 wired router with no problems on AOL
As far as I have read, most routers will work, but the MTU has to be manually set to 1400 due to the encapsulation overheads on AOL
It seems it's just a case of AOL being lazy and not wanting to bother telling people how to change their router's MTU setting to make the router work with AOL. :rolleyes:The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0 -
In that case most d-links will work too, my cheapy DI-604 has the option to change MTU.0
