Landlords, will you answer this question, please?

We are selling our house and will probably need to go into rented accommodation for a while.

We have a 16 year old cat. She mainly sleeps! How much of an issue is that generally?

Our estate agent said that "no pets" usually means no dogs who might rip up the house!

I'd appreciate your views.

Personally speaking, I wouldn't have so much of an issue with a cat. My only concern (and this comes from owning a cat) is that they tend to scratch the sofa and walls.

    Depends:

"No pets" is usually a standard clause in tenancies (should also say "without Landlord's agreement which will not be unreasonably withheld"..)..

But Landlords & Agents differ... and clearly there is a difference between 5 rotties owned by an ill-bred loony & a small goldfish...

In your shoes I'd explain the situation to agents/Landlords and see how they react. You can't FORCE a Landlord to take you but if open & up-front should get a good hearing... Many should be OK, question is will that be for the property you want??

Good luck! Hope it works out...

I'd have to agree with the above, Most TA's specify no pets but i'm sure if you talk to the LL they wouldn.t mind, cats are pretty much out all day anyway...

You may be asked for a larger deposit, & to have the carpets flea treated as well as cleaned when you leave. One old cat is fine...more than-3 no way...mad cat lady :D

That reminds me of the first house we bought, the previous owners had cats.
I remember it well. It was a small 2 bedroom house, buy the time it took to walk through the front door and out the back, we was riddled with flea bites around the ankles. They hide under the skirting board.

We had to get the council out to spray the house with pesticide and couldn't enter the house for 24 hours..:rotfl:

Given two equal tenants - one with and one without a !!!!! - I'd choose the one without.

    Of course, if I didn't know, I wouldn't care.

I have just rented my house, and actually put "pets welcome" in the advert, having rented before and knowing the limitations, I have a clause that specifically states and names the animals permitted to live there, and and clause that require the carpets to be professionally cleaned (proof needed) on vacation. I also forbid breeding of animals.

  • I'm a 1 house LL, and did let to a couple with cats  saddly they were breeding longhairs  which mean't lots of cleaning  toms and all that :lipsrseal

If it's just a case of 1 older cat, and a bigger deposit to cover any additional costs; I'd be more than happy to have you as a tenant.
