your trying to sort things out for yourself. Too many doctors are doling out anti depressants and the like these days. My doctor offered them to me because i had a bad back for 6 months and he said they would help - what. I said the only thing that would help my state of mind is if you make my back better. 2 weeks later i had an injection in my spine and i was fine, instantly. Good luck at your studies and i hope things go well for you

Actually some anti-depressants do have analgesic- like (pain moderating) properties:

It's a private service, so you need to pay for it. It would be the same if you wanted a doctor to counter sign a photo for a passport application or if you had needed a letter to be able to fly somewhere. If surgeries didn't inpose a charge then GPs would have no time to see patients as they and the surgery staff would be too busy authourising and writing letters!

You are lucky, a lot of GPs do not offer a letter writing service at all.

Would your uni cover the cost if you applied via ALF?

I think its greed/laziness. They tried to charge me £25 just for signing a medical history form (the signature alone - not any of my medical details whatsoever). If it was simply to stop lots of requests, they could have charged me a token fee of something like £5 or, as its a medical form so it must be a doctor (unlike the passport forms etc.) be reasonable and not charge as I had no choice but to go to a doctor.

You said 'they tried to charge' does that mean that they charged you less or you didnt bother having it done.

So by me saying I'd rather try and deal with things without any medication instead of accepting his offer of some mad drugs for depression, and saving the NHS some money that way, I still get charged?!

The 'mad drugs' i am prescribed are for diagnosed clinical depression...which is a physical illness. If you had clinical depression there is no way you could 'deal with things' yourself believe me:rolleyes:

Could I just add that student counsellors are in demand and often have a waiting list, so they should not be used as a cheap means of obtaining evidence!

In fact the service at my uni clearly states that supporting mit circs claims is only one aspect of their role and they will not support students who come just for this.

£5 is no deterrent to most people. Once they start charging £25 it is.

I hope you are never have to be fitted in as an emergency patient, or go to your GP with what you think is routine but they realise it's more serious then you will realise they are not lazy.

BTW if any off you had a serious condition and where in hospital you would get your sick note/letter free.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

You seem to forget that a GP is a professional person. Do you think a solicitor would sign a form for a 'token' £5?

I wasn't suggesting this. I and the friend I was referring to were both long term users of the counselling service. I was simply providing a piece of information that the OP may have found helpful, rather than saying "grab a letter and run".
