  • Hi there,

I studied 3d design at school and college and one of my projects was masks and hats of the seasons, and one of these was of course the easter bonnet!

I started with a cardboard box, u need to measure the size of your daughters head and mark out a circular brim, then using the size of her head cut out an inner circle. remember to leave a bit of room though, as you still have to attach the main part to it.

Then cut out the main part of the hat, you will have to bend it to get the round shape, remember and tape it all up securely you dont want it coming loose.

Then you cut out a circular top to finish the hat, and start attaching all the parts together.

To decorate i used green and yellow tissue paper and used pva glue to slop it all on, it takes a few coats to cover it all up. I suppose you could use paint as well.

For decoration i made egg shapes, large and small and did really bright designs on them all, also if you nip to the pound shop you can pick up little chicks to attach.

To finish my masterpiece i made daffodils to attach to the side!

Good luck with it and if you need any help just ask.

The poundshop have packs of 20 small yellow chicks and other things such as bunches of fake daffodils which are great for easter bonnets! I got some for my 2 boys who are having an easter parade on friday. I'm also going to be collecting twigs to stick on them like a fake birds nest.

My DS and I have just finished making his Easter hat (bonnets are for girls he told me!) for his Beaver meeting tomorrow. We made daffodils by cutting the tops off egg boxes, painting them yellow, then sticking cloves in the middle to make the stamen(?), he then made circles of petals out of yellow card (or crepe paper would be good) and stuck the egg box bit in the middle. The stalks were made from bits of tongue depressors (from the doctors), which he painted green. We then stuck them on the side of the hat.

On the top he made a nest from straw and popped in a couple of chicks and some mini eggs.

In my experience, the best hats etc are always the homemade ones where Mum has obviously taken the time and trouble to come up with something, however rough around the edges, rather than perfect shop bought things. Let your daughter get involved too, she will feel so proud if she helped make it.

    Good luck!

    I've been Money Tipped!
last year bought charity shop hats and cahrity shop articles to decorate them stiched on chick and glued a cream egg... lots of green crepe paper under and tiny chicks around...
A tad heavy with the cream egg but DD was delighted as she just left the wrapper on the hat and ate it after the parade :D

Hi. You can use paper plates to make bonnets and add thread/ribbon on each side to tie on:

    Paper Plate Bonnet
    Materials

    Paper plate
    Construction paper
    Tissue
    Crayons or markers
    Glue
    Wool / ribbon

    Instructions
Kids can decorate a paper plate any way they wish. Glue on pieces of pastel paper, tissue flowers, chicks, cut out egg shapes, lambs etc on plate. (use your imagination) . Attach wool / ribbon to each side of plate so it can be tied under child's chin.

    Hope that this helps

Last year fir my DS bonnet we made a top hat with bunny ears sticking out the sided od the brim. Then decorated the hat in mini creme egg wrappers DS and DD loved eating the chocs and it ment he sat still long enough for me to measure his head for the brim.
