Play.com - What can I do??

I recently ordered something off of play.com for £4.49. I was really pleased to recieve the parcel just 2 days later and opened it up. Inside was a pair of £18 headphones and the personal details on the invoice of someone else who had bought these headphones despite my address and info being on the outside of the box.

I decided to let Play.com know and reported the incorrect item to them and received and email a few hours later saying that I need to send the item back to them via Recorded Delivery or I would be charged for the item.

Is it just me or is this completely wrong? I decided to send them a strongly-worded email back saying that I find it ridiculous that I should have to pay for any delivery to return it (let alone recorded delivery). Also, the fact that they sent me someone else's personal details is not good enough.

To make it worse, I spent ages scouring their site and couldn't find an email address either. I had to come on this website to find one.

I kind of regret not selling them on eBay and buying my £4.49 item again and pocketing the change. Any thoughts?

Absolutely. They need to pay for the return postage. Hang on to it until they send you a prepaid label or similar.

You did not order this, so they cannot legally charge you for it. They can ask for it back, but can't expect you to pay for the return.

What should I do if they go and charge me for it because I won't send it back?

Did you order on a credit or debit card?

If they charge your credit card, issue a charge-back.

Issues over delivery and customer data aren't new.

For some unfathomable reason, MSE mods continue to allow a "warning thread" about Play com to be buried in Bargain Buys, Sassy Shopping, & Fantastic Freebies. . .

. . . when what's reported on that thread amounts to anything but:

Do not return anything to Play com until you have written confirmation from them (an email will do) that they will cover the postage costs involved.

It's their fault: a despatch mix-up -- well, after reading that other thread, I hope so. . .

To make it worse, it's been almost a week and a half and I still haven't recieved my original order, depite being told it was dispatched as soon as I contacted them. You can't tell them about it either until it has been 21 days after ordering. This is ridiculous.

BTW, I'm just keeping the headphones unless they want to come collect it themselves.

When I received a bashed DVD boxset from Play, they told me to send it back via Recorded then they'll refund me the cost of it. They did - well sort of, they refunded about 90% of it, not all of it for some reason.

I was just about to link to this. Play have appalling customer service. I bought items from other sellers (eg member of the public) and they were fine but 3 out of 7 items I bought from Play itself were either wrong or damaged. I terminated my account. On the other hand, Amazon has been great and never caused me any hassle so I'd recommend them in future.
