Advice Needed (Council Housing)

Appolgies, but this has nothing to do with bankruptcy.

My Dh and I are corrently registered with home select (for council/Housing authority housing). We made a bid (showing interest) on a 4 bedroomed house last Friday and we are in que position 6. This afternoon while I was picking my dd up from school there was a visit from a home select officer (my dh and youngest dd were at home), he couldn't stay as my youngest dd was having a temper tantrum. He is going to phone tomorrow and visit again.

Can anyone who has any experience with council housing shed any light on what this visit was for? (My info booklet states that a home select officer comes round to check your application before making an offer of housing).

I have bidded on council housing 3 times this year and have never had any visits before.

I find it hard to believe that we are going to get a council house being number 6 on the bidding list. Dare I be hopefull? I have been waiting for 15 years.

  • hello every council works slightly different.

have you checked the website what position you are in now as the people infront may have jumped out the que?

it might be to check you are still living at that address as alot of people rent out their council houses so it may be just to check that you are you iykwim

i didnt get a visit when i was bidding i only got a visit before my application was registered.

in my council its only the first 2 people that visit houses but the first 3 for a flat

my council is barking asnd dagenham by the way

We have been on the home select scheme since they started, we have never had a visit before. In my estimation the scheme has been going 2 years +. We were number 2 on the list, then number 3 and we are now at number 6. We are bidding on a disabled band house and we are in silver banding (gold is the highest).

My dh and dd have mobility issuses. We have 4 children aged 15 (a boy nearly 16), 3 girls (aged 2 1/2, 5 1/2 and 13). My son has his own small bedroom and our bedroom is tiny and according to shelters guidelines is big enough for 1 1/2 people - we have a double bed nad a cot bed and a small set of drawers in there and no room for a wordrobe for our clothes. The room my 2 daughters share (5 year old & 13 year old) is big enough for 1 person - we have 2 single beds end to end and just enough room for a small wordrobe and a set of drawers. We have an open plan living room with stairs in them.

    Hi,

I'm Hertsmere council. When we got an offer I was living in a hostel at the time. The HA called the hostel manager and had a word with him re rent account, conductability, how are you as a tenant, do you keep yr place clean etc. I bid on our first property after fighting to get my requirements changed from 2 bed to 3 bed as I have son with a disability. Didn't hear anything after bidding, rang council and was told I was 2nd but house had been accepted. A few weeks later hostel manager spoke to me to say that he'd a call from HA asking about me. I then got offer as person in front has refused property.

This may be the case with you. Just because there were 6 in front doesn't necessarily mean they were suitable for the property. Depends what the ad states. Could be disabled, transfers, age restrictions get priority.

I'd give your LA a ring tom and find out.

    Good Luck

    Update...
The gentleman came round again last Friday afternoon, he told us didn't come round to offer us a house. He wanted to check the details on our form and make sure that they were correct and he also wanted that childrens up to date ages. He also asked questions about our daughter (who has mobility issues) and asked if she could manage stairs.

The house we bid on was a 4 bedroomed one with a ramp access and wider doors and it also had a stair lift. The advert in the local paper said that preference would be given to applicants requiring that type of accommodation. We had a letter (a few months ago) saying that we had to bid on 4 bedroomed places that are suitable for people with mobility problems.

We have heard nothing yet since the visit, and I have been checking Homeselect website and the house hasn't been let yet. The next lot of houses are availble to be bid on this coming Friday (we are only allowed to bid on 2 properties every 2 weeks).

    Update no 2.....
Just had a phone call from the Council, we have been successful in our bid, we have to wait for the keys to be returned and then have a look at the house.
