LG Television wont turn on just over 1yr old

Hi wonder if anyone can give me any advice.
We bought an LG 26" lcd tv april last year from littlewoods catalogue. It has been absolutely fine up until two days ago.
With the model we have you cannot turn it off of standby mode other than turning of at the plug. So when i went to turn it on with the remote, from standby, all the lights went off and nothing since. No standby light, wont turn on or anything.
We contacted LG as it is only just out of the 1yr warranty and was told basically tough luck. Contacted Littlewoods as these were the suppliers, who after we mentioned the eu thing (of which i dont really know much) said that we were to obtain a full report from a VAT registered repair company to send to them and then they will decide if its our fault or manufacturing fault in which case they would look at repairing or replacing it.
Having rung about 5 different companys, all of whom said they were not vat registered I spoke to a lovely guy at another, bigger repair company who advised the following:
a) very few tv repair companys have a large enough turnover to be vat registered so not sure how they expect us to find one
b) that as the tv is less than 2 yrs old it was their responsibility to arrange and pay for the report etc and not us
c) that should we decide to get an independent report done, which would mean that the tv unit would have to opened up therefore breaking the warranty seals, they could effectively say that they would not do anything because the seals are broken
d) this is a very common, and well known (within the business) fault with LG tvs and therefore he is 99% sure that it is manufacturing fault not something we have done.
I really dont know what to do, waiting for a call back from littlewoods to see what they say but does anybody know the legalities?
Thanks

If I may answer your points
a) You shouldn't need to find a VAT registered company to get a report. Just from someone reliable enough to prove a fault
b) No, you will have to arrange and pay for a report. Once the TV is older than 6 months, it is up to you to prove the fault was there from purchase/has not been caused by your own misuse.
C) If it's outside the manufacturer's warranty period, what does that matter?!
d) If it's a common fault, then it should be easily identifiable by an engineer. So it should get repairedSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Just to reiterate what Esqui has said you have to proof the fault is inheritant fault with the tv they dont have to be vat registered, how about lg engineers or recomenended engineers.
I had a similar problem with samsung an dthey recommended a repairer for a independent report, as esqui said it is upto you to prove a fault but before going ahead check that littlewoods would be ahppy with whoever you decide.
Infact once you show you are going to do it they may decide to repair or replace in my case they did sometimes they call your bluff, most company dont even go as far as to ask for engineers report.0 -
You could ask Littlewoods to recommend a repairer/engineer to get a report from. If they cannot recommend one, I imagine you would be able to choose yourself.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you.
