Should I have recieved the software on cd?

I recently bought a desktop from a high street retailer I took the computer home, and no sofware on cd. I call them up, and I was told I needed to purchase thier recovery disk. Surely If I have bought a computer, then I should be the owner of all software that comes with the computer, and it should be provided to me on cd? Is this common now to now provide the software on cd? Thanks,

You don't own the software - you own a license to use the software on one PC.

All you need is a way to re-install the software - which you have as a recovery partition on the hard-drive itself.

Many manufacturers stopped shipping recovery CD's in a bid to save money. I suspect MS has something to do with it too, having millions of CDs floating around with OEM copies of Windows on them, can't be good for business.
