2 boilers in one house?

Looking to move house. One house we like has recently had an extension built. Instead of fitting a larger boiler they have kept the original boiler (looks reasonably modern, quite small wall mounted) and added a second boiler to service the extension part of the house.

I thought this was a bit strange but they assured me that it worked well and meant that, if a boiler should fail they would still have heating and hot water in one part of the house, plus the advantage of being able to have different settings on each one.

Does this seem logical? Is it efficient?

We have always had a service contract (BG). WOuld they service both boilers annually?

Grateful for any advice.

I am in the same position in that I have 2 boilers - one in an Annex.

As you suggest, the normal reason for this is that the original boiler does not have the capacity to cope with the extra radiators and, as it is wall mounted, it might not be possible to get a bigger wall mounted boiler.

In my case it was not an option as the annex is detached.

I also have BG Servicing and they treat both systems as separate - ie you pay twice.

The best I have managed to negotiate is a 10% discount on the second system.

Seems a bit unfair. If all the radiators had come form one boiler they would all be covered under one policy.

As they are both in the same house could I get away with one policy and point the engineers to an alternate boiler each year for servicing? That way if there is a fault they would just repair that fault without being aware that there is another boiler in a different room.

Have you tried other service companies like D&G or directline?

BG have everything on a computer and with the latest regulations they have to do every 'by the book''.

Even though they are in the same house they are still separate systems(I assume). Obviously you can try - as I did - they might be more sympathetic!

There have been loads of threads on CH cover. As far as I can tell nobody provides the same cover as BG any cheaper; and as I have always had excellent service from them I will stick with the 'Devil I know.'

I would have thought the correct price should be one Homecare 200 - boiler and radiators, etc plus one homecare 100 for the second boiler.
