Unemployment Making Me Utterly MISERABLE!

I'm no longer answering my door in case it's the men in white coats with strait jackets
Staying awake and motivated is a killer. I fill whatever time I have, so that I seem to end up sending in application forms on the closing date (or in the case of one this week, after it, by accident).
I started with daytime TV when I was first made unemployed (I resigned, so no benefits for first 6 months), but luckily the BBC axed all the shows I was watching, so I had to move on and do something. I have never watched an episode of Trisha or Jeremy Kyle - something I'm quite proud I haven't lowered myself to.
I've done DIY, but paint, brushes, cleaning products..all cost money...and spending when I'm not earning is a non-starter.
I've had loads of books from the library and spend a lot of day reading online, but can't see that's going to help me get back into work.
Despite the scathing comments about agencies above, I think I'm going to have to contact some, so they can harvest CVs and waste my time on a regular basis before telling me they have nothing suitable (as MOST agencies do..not all)

Bloody showoff. Granted I'm not as motivated all of the time, but at the point I was trying hard, very motivated, upbeat.. etc, I had 2 interviews (one on the phone) in about 6 months. Since March, I'm yet to be invited to interview at all
Seriously, good luck!
I know how you feel Toasterman, I have good and bad days as well, when I sometimes think that nothing will ever go right (and I am normally right about that). However, I still have my health (sort of), and it is sunny outside. My last interview was in November last year, and the agencies do not even bother to tell me how I have got on for the jobs they put me in for.
Reading is good for you, because you are learning all the time, and books are good for concentration and memory.
Good luck,

I phoned three places today to talk to someone about some jobs and get more info
first person was out all day
second person on holiday til next week
third person also on holiday!
:rolleyes:0 -
Well just back from a really tough interview, but think I did ok. Had an assessment day yesterday for a role that looks pretty good, so hopefully something will come of it
456789 - yeah, I have had that lots - they never have the decency to call back either. Totally soul destroying.0 -
Well they probably will call/email because 1) phoned me yesterday multiple times and left a message on my answerphone 2) sent a reply to my first email 3) not sure
Hope that role works out for you0 -

Toasterman - as a newbie, I feel I should apologise - sorry, didn't mean to demoralise anybody with the 6 month comment. It is actually a year for me too since I was in perm employment, had some temp work after that but then it all dried up.
I'm registered with a shedload of agencies, make direct online applications and send speculative letters (which has proved to be the biggest waste of time, printer ink and expensive paper), looking for suitable voluntary work too.
Typical experience: rang rec agent (London) who sounded interested in my experience, wanted me to go in to register, sent my CV, she said she would call after it arrived. (Which is quite amazing when I've heard that some rec agents are "dis-engaging" candidates due to lack of jobs.) Suitably encouraged, I put in a follow up call today. Mysteriously she is out of the office for the rest of the week and then on holiday. yeh, right ....
Yes true that being employed isn't always great but unemployment is hugely draining emotionally and psychologically. So much easier to go to work ...
Still find it hard to cope with all the rejection and to keep motivated.0 -
anybody interested in applying to the London Ambulance Service - there are "Current Vacancies" listed.
(just tried to post the link but the Board won't let me.)0 -
I have another one to file under 'Why agencies suck'. I got a phone call from an agency asking me to come in for an interview/registration at half past 2 today. So I dug out all my id documents and bank statments and assorted crap they requested and went to their office in town. After waiting in the waiting room for 15 minutes I was told that the person who called me had had to go visit a client for an 'emergency meeting' so she couldn't see me. She couldn't see me tomorrow because she would be going to newcastle for some reason. Ofcourse the rest of them were far to busy to speak to me but they could pass her a copy of my cv (why? she already had it, thats kinda why i was asked to comr in) and she would get back to me at some undefined point in the near future,0

Oh Medini - that is crPPP. You have my sympathy. I've experienced similar myself.
Collectively I'm sure all of us on these boards could write a book about our bad experiences with agencies. So demoralising.
Keep your pecker up.0 -
Thats awful medini, no way to treat someone - thats why I really hate dealing with agencies.0
