Greek Island holiday, usual questions!

We've just booked our holiday to Kos in September, and I'm sooo excited! Since this is the 1st time we've visited any of the Greek Islands (and Kos looks brilliant!) I just wondered a couple of the usual holiday things...

Water- Does it have to be bottled to drink, or can it be drunk straight from the tap?

Mozzies- are there many out there and does anyone recommend taking repellent? We're going to be based in the main town, but will travel over the whole island over our 2weeks...

I'm pretty sure there aren't any jabs to be had, but if anyone can think of anything else relevant to mention, I'd be v. greatful.

-x-

    HI

We stayed in Kos Town a couple of years ago.
Only drink bottled water and try not to have ice. If you order a bottle of water with your meal, make sure the top is sealed.
There are mozzies but we didn't get many bites. I'd take repellent to be on the safe side.
    Enjoy your holiday and HTH.

Hiya, and thanks for the welcome...
This is such a good site, loads of money saving wisdom (which is always good) and quite an addictive way to spend a day off actually :p
We're travelling to Kos as a couple Smiley Mum, as there's only the two of us at the moment ;)

water - yes used bottled water only!

mozzies - yes again! Get some spray repellent (Bayer is good) and also plug in mosquito machines (with continental plug) which burn a tablet of anti-mozzie stuff which you can put in your bedroom - turn it on before you go out for the evening and then your room will be mozzie-free on your return! I normally then put a new tablet in for the rest of hte night to be on the safe side! Also, if you plan to sit outside in the evenings on your verandah/balcony, it's a good idea to buy from a local shop in Kos the "spiral" mosquito repellants which you simply put on a plate and let it slowly smoke away.... Works a treat! Most shops sell them.

The other thing you will need to bear in mind about greece if this is your first visit, is that Greek plumbing cannot cope with toilet paper  You will see that loos have a small bin by the toilet and this is where you deposit your paper! They are emptied daily in hotels and apartments if you have maid service... You'll soon get used to it!

For the toliet issue I usualy take nappy bag at least then its not so bad for the next person into the loo after you ...just buy the really cheap ones from £Land.
I also take citrenella candles with me for sitting on the balcony/patio at night its nice and romatic with a bottle of wine and helps keep bugs away
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel

You can drink the water in Kos, but it is not that good in taste. As the bottled water is quite cheap (6X1.5lt bottles @2 Euros) i would reccomend you to drink bottled water
