Redundancy - incvome protection insurance and JSA

Hi All

I wondered if anyone who'd been ina similar situation may be able to advise me about my redundancy situation from August 2009.

I have income protection insurance which I was allowed to take out for half of my gross monthly earnings and is £850. The condition of getting this seems to be that I am signing on for JSA.

Does anyone know if I would still get JSA payments when I get insurance? I live with my partner who earns about 25k so I don't know how this affects it either. Also is it likely I can claim housing and council tax benefit to pay towards my share of the mortgage which is in his name?

Thanks, any help very much appreciated.

You will still get JSA if its contributions based. Not sure about housing benefit as not in your name but should get discount on council tax if you are on the council tax book

As lrr says, you will get JSA contribution based for 6 months on top. Its not a lot but it helps.

The amount of your income protection plus your partners earnings will decide how much income-based benefit you recieve, plus things like no. of kids etc.

Use https://www.entitledto.co.uk and plug estimated figures in. That'll tell you how much of each benfit type you'll be likely to receive.

You'll be able to get contributions based JSA for 6 months but it seems unlikely that you'll get any meants tested benefits after this, although you should still be able to sign on to get your NICs paid.

You should check with your insurance company whether you have to actually be in receipt of JSA to continue your claim or whether just signing on will be enough.

Hi, thanks everyone. I'll have to check my insurance policy for the exact wording re claiming or being in receipt of JSA. I guess I'd definitely only get the first 6 months JSA because of my partners income. I hope that I could get something paid from housing/ council tax benefit as I usually pay half of the bills/ mortgage.

Also, I wondered if anyone knows whether I will have the insurance classed as taxable income as I'm wondering if I'd be eligible for a tax rebate next year if I still haven't found a job then.

If the mortgage isn't in your name or joint names then you'll not qualify for housing costs towards the interest part of the mortgage. Even if you had been able to qualify, no assistance is given when insurance is in place to cover loss of earnings as this is considered income.

As your partner is working & earning £25k you won't qualify for ctb either as this is a means tested benefit as mentioned by Oldernotwiser.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
