Calling from Italy to UK

Hi everyone

My company is employing someone in Italy and they will need to call the UK quite often. I've been given the great task of finding the cheapest way to do it. I know using a call overrider such as 18185 is probably cheapest way UK to Italy, but as from Italy to UK, I know it's not a common thing so I hope someone can help. My inital guess is using Skype but I know very little about it and the website is not very user friendly for complete novices / first time users. It assumes you know what Skype is lol. I have to try to explain this to my boss who, due to their religious beliefs, have only started using computers in the past year.

Hope someone can help!

Tracey

    Skype is cheap.

You could try a vodafone payg mobile now that they have abolished roaming charges untiil 01/08/09. Basically their is no connection charge and it uses the minutes and texts you have in the UK. They offer 100 mins and 300 texts for £10 top up etc etc.

There is a thread explaining how it works on the Overseas Travel MSE forum.

(Hopefully they will extend it past the 01st August

Sign up on www.poivy.com. For 10 Euros (+VAT) you can call to UK from Italy via a local access number (0699268062).

You can make up to 300 minutes of calls each week for free. Your initial credit will allow you to call for 120 days for free to the UK and many other countries too. The credit does not expire after the 120 days but after 120 days you will be charged for each call to the UK (probably 1 eurocent per minute). To avoid paying for calls just add more credit before the 120 days is up. Any credit can, of course, be used to call chargeable destinations. But you cannot make free calls if you have no credit.

POIVY do no charge for calls to the access number (0699268062) but your phone provider will charge at the prevaling rate (unless Italian telephone companies provide free national calls)

POIVY also have a VOIP application which is easy to use from a PC. That way you can make calls and avoid the possible charge of calling the access number.

If you're going the VOIP route (at the U.K. end) SIP Broker has PSTN dial-in numbers in Milan, Rome and Trento (so a regular phone can be used at the Italy end). So any SIP broker dialable VOIP provider could be used, even the free ones.
