Eco-balls - are they worth the money?

Trying to be environmentally friendly, I'm trying to cut down the amount of chemicals in my home. I've heard about using Eco-balls as an alternative to washing powder, but I'm a bit skeptical that they work.
Has anyone tried them? Do they really get your washing clean?
Are they worth the huge initial outlay for the long-term saving?

Thanks.

    Hello lynseyr1

In the 'MoneySaving Old Style' board, there is a thread which has four pages of posts to help you to decide.

Wash balls - Laundry balls - Eco balls

I tried these a couple of years ago and was not impressed, washing looked like it had just been washed in water, and no nice fresh smell either.

    Thanks for your help.

I tried a search first but it didn't come up with anything. Will read the other thread. Sorry to post something already posted.
