Opening upvc windows

Dear all, I've just had some new windows fitted but have discovered that while they open and fix at the closed level, and then slightly open (about half an inch), I can't leave and fix them open any wider than that. Unlike the old wooden ones they've replaced which allowed me to open and fix them at varying opening widths using the stay. Have I missed anything with these? I've never had them before so it's very likely it's obvious and I don't know how. I want to be able to fix them open at about 3-4 inches wide, so they let fresh air in, but the dog won't fall out if she leans on them! I can open them obviously to any width, and they stay put, but they push open further with little pressure. They all hinge at the top, open at the bottom if that makes a difference.

thanks

DS

Sounds like you have a catch built into the window sill that allows the window to be locked open to allow a small amount of air in. THe only way that you could leave the window open more to prevent your dog falling out is to look at the hinge and find a small screw that is attached to the hinge on the window frame. By tightening this screw slightly you should be able to tighten the movement when you open the window -it makes the hinge stiffer to operate.

The screw is like a small gub screw and will be on the sliding part of the hinge.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you splot (great name!). Yes I've found the screw you describe. This does tighten it but I don't feel that confident about it if for example, she jumped at the window at a passing cat. Thinking about it, of greater concern is children who visit frequently so it occurred to me there might be some sort of child safety gizmos you can buy that might help this, as surely the same risk would apply with a child.. I'll have a google around.

    Thanks again for your help.

Perhaps you need something like these:

Contact the company who installed the windows and ask them to fit restrictor stays, you may need to pay for them but they would be the best soloution
