Business parking in a residential area - can anything be done?

I live in a residential area that just happens to have a business (in this case a garage) right in the middle of the street. In recent months the parking situation has become quite frankly, abysmal. The garage is clearly failing to provide adequate on-site parking for it's customers and staff and as a result residents are often unable to park due to the presence of customers and various courtesy vehicles. Also there is a junction within a few yards of the garage which is often obscured by parked cars resulting in a number of minor collisions over the past few months.

Can anything be done? I understand the garage expanded recently, isn't there some kind of responsibility on the owners to provide adequate parking for their customers?

have you spoken to the council?

for clarity (other posters may be able to help more than me) is it someone operating from business premies which happen to be in a residential area, or is is someone operating from residential premises and causing a nuisance?

Do you need a residents permit to park on the road?

If not remember you have no rights to the road outside your home anyone can park there.

Not if they are parking dangerously. You will probably need to speak to your councillor on this matter and it might pay to keep a record of any minor prangs if possible.

I think that councils should implement rules that businesses have to provide adequate parking facilities.
Instead, they seem to want to restrict parking spaces for some strange reason.

my local authority insists on parking bays for businesses applying for planning permission.
There's little that can be done to prevent an existing business expanding though.
The council could impose parking permits, yellow lines etc. That procedure can take time though.
In the meantime, i would suggest informing the police of any dangerous parking. The police will have the power to move/remove the vehicles but if they're not parked dangerously and there is no traffic order in place, then all they'll be able to do is ask the garage to move the vehicles.

Best course of action is to find out who your local PCSO is and call them every time cars are parked inconsiderately or too close to the junction.

Many councils in certain towns operate a policy whereby new business premises are restricted in number of car parking spaces they can provide.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Thats right.
It appears to be a directive from Government.
The theory is that if you restrict the number of parking spaces available you will discourage people from actually driving their cars.
Venturing slightly off-topic... but anyone think this policy will work?
