Hi all need some advice please, moved into my flat 2 years ago and it has gas central heating, with a baxi burmuda 12-16 kw boiler, with one 36x18 cylinder, and 6 radiators, i always knew that these boilers go on for ever as the one in my old house was 30 years old when i left, so my question is combi boilers are going to be more efficent i know but do not seem to last long, will i get my money back on savings in gas if i get a combi or should i stay with what i have.

Thanks for any help

If I was in your position, I'd replace the boiler if it was faulty but leave it alone otherwise. You'd need to calculate probable annual savings to work out how many years the boiler would take to pay for itself - quite a few, I'd imagine.

There was a Baxi back boiler in this house when we moved in thirteen years ago and we wondered about changing it to a combi at that time. We had it examined by a heating engineer and were told that it was in good condition and that spare parts were still available for it and so we decided to continue with it. Since then we have had it serviced annually and have had to have replaced one set of burners and two thermocouples. It was serviced three weeks ago and was fine. We plan to continue with it as long as we can as we feel that we will not be able to recover the cost of replacing it by the reduced energy costs of a combi.

Hi all, thanks for the replys, think i will just service the boiler and just use system more efficiently. have reduced electric by 50% but not able to do the same with the gas, i might enquire about getting the walls insulated thu will have to see if they are cavity walls as the place was built in 1958,

    Once again thankyou

You may also like to think about things like topping up the loft insulation, thermostatic valves on radiators, reflective foil behind radiators, all of which can help to improve heating and so reduce gas consumption.

Thanks Alan, the loft is a nightmare lagging all over the foof 3 feet thick in places, have just found out that walls are not cavity, and i do have TRVs, thu i am replacing all the rads and pipework over the next few weeks, all of which should help, not looking forward to crawling all over the lagging to replace the pipework thu, but have no choice as i have concrete floors, and i will servive the boiler this weekend, bit pived of as i lost all my brushes for boiler cleaning some time back.
