Help with cancelling an account and charges

I set up an account for web hosting a while ago and have tried to cancel this account and have not used it in anyway since I created it. However they seem to make me jump through hoops to get it cancelled so I cancelled the direct debit.

They have phoned me and said there is an outstanding balance and I told them I had tried to cancel and there long winded cancellation process is prohibitive. They are now sending that off to the recovery agency and hammering me with fees, they didnt tell me how much before the person basically hung up on me.

What can I do to not have to pay for something I have not used and they have made overly complicated to cancel?

For your information to cancel. Write them a letter stating your intent to cancel the account. They reply with a form (at some point) fill out form and send back. One month from the date the form is processed they will cancel the account. Compared to cancelling a subscription on another website; go to account, click cancel, click ok...
