sealing a bath

I'm redoing the sealant around the bath, on 2 sides theres a 3mm gap above the bath to the tiles, but on one short edge, its 8mm. Is 8mm's too big a gap for silicone sealant? It had those long plastic edging strips on it before, but I dont like them much.
