TBH i no longer deal with independant hotels. I just book a premier lodge. At least you know what you are getting,they are all the same and they are answerable. I can then spend my extra money outside on a good meal in a restaurant or other entertainment.
Many of these big old hotels have had their day now.
I'd write to them expressing your disappointment and stating how much you would like refunded. If they do not comply, simply submit a claim via the moneyclaim on line courts service.0
